Foils & Rudders

Optimal performance of a sailing vessel is highly dependent on appendage design and manufacture. We design to withstand impacts including groundings. Section and planform design is paramount. This enables you to obtain the same amount of lift from your appendage, with a fraction of the drag. Surface piecing appendages (i.e. transom hung rudders and hydrofoils) require a close look on ventilation issues to prevent loss of lift. Many sailors know about the problem of a ventilating rudder during the bear away. This loss of control creates danger.  It becomes even more dangerous when a hydrofoil ventilates, and the boat crashes back into the water. It results in a sudden stop from high speed!

Precision in the manufacturing process is crucial. We work with tolerances less than +/- 0.1mm. Precision starts with the tooling. Very small tools are required for instance to create an accurate leading edge. It is important to know exactly how a material will behave during the curing cycle of production to avoid any structural failure or deformation. This includes knowledge of the thermal expansion of the tooling and the foil material. Thermal expansion and shrink during the curing cycle needs to be calculated correctly.

In order to optimise your project, we can offer different processes in the tooling, and with simple wet-layup, resin infusion, up to pre-preg lay-ups.
